Divergent is the debut novel by the American novelist Veronica Roth, published by Harper Collins Children's Books in 2011. The novel is the first in the Divergent trilogy, a series of dystopian novels for young adults set in a divergent universe. The Divergent novel features a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago and follows Beatrice "Tris" Prior as she explores her identity within a society that defines her citizens by her social and personality-related affiliation with five factions, eliminating the threat of someone exercising their independence. will and threaten the security of the population again. Underlying the action and the main dystopian argument is a romantic plot between Tris and one of his instructors in the Dauntless faction, nicknamed Four.
The novel has been compared to other books for young adults such as The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner because of its similar themes and target audience. In particular, the novel explores common themes of fiction for young adults, such as the authority of adults and the transition from childhood to maturity, as well as broader reasons such as the place of violence and social structures within a post-apocalyptic society. His main plot device, the division of society into personality types, is used in other works of science fiction. Beyond its literary context, Roth's open statement of his religion as a Christian has brought comments from Christian communities that support and challenge the novel.
Roth wrote Divergent while working on a Creative Writing degree at Northwestern University, and was quickly purchased for publication along with subsequent books in the trilogy (completed in October 2013). Summit Entertainment bought the media rights to the book in 2011 and subsequently produced a film adaptation entitled Divergente that premiered on March 21, 2014. The film, a hit among the public, generated $ 288,747,895 at the box office despite mixed reviews of critics.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames Tris herself and fights alongside her fellow initiates to live the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of resistance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As the initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who his friends really are and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating and sometimes exasperating child fits into the life he has chosen.
