Parents should know that A Curse So Dark and Lonely, the first book in a series of the same name by bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer, is an imaginative variation of the theme “Beauty and the Beast”, in this case, with a high student of Last year of high school with a bad leg due to cerebral palsy and also a series of family problems, which is trapped in the kingdom of Emberfall. Where Prince Rhen has been forced to relive the fall of his 18th birthday 300 times, which always ends in blood when he becomes a monster. There are many dark things here, from hacking, stabbing, and devouring to a sadistic villain who makes his victim spit blood just for fun. But in this murky world, the young sarcastic forms of young Harper, his kind heart, and his considerable courage open up new possibilities and unexpected hopes.

“It has everything you want in an account of a classic fairy tale.” – Jodi Picoult, best-selling author of the New York Times of A Spark of Light and Small Great Things

“Absolutely fascinating.” – Stephanie Garber, author number 1 of the New York Times, the best seller of Caraval and Legendary

In an exuberant and contemporary fantasy account of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer offers readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for Marissa Meyer fans.

Summary

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful sorceress to repeat the fall of his eighteenth year over and over again, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell in love with him. But that was before he knew that at the end of each fall, he would become a vicious beast committed to destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and until the last hint of hope.

Nothing has been easy for Harper. With her father missing, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding her family together while constantly underestimating her due to her cerebral palsy, she learned to be strong enough to survive. But when he tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, he is somehow absorbed by Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where he is or what to believe. But as he spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, he begins to understand what is at stake. And when Rhen realizes that Harper is not just another girl to love, his hope returns. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall. . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and their people from total ruin.

Review

Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall, is cursed to repeat the fall of his 18th birthday until he can find a woman to fall in love with him, even as he transforms each season into a monstrous beast. The season is restored after each failure, all 327 of them. When Harper intervenes in what looks like a kidnapping in the streets of Washington, DC, she is transported to another world. Instead of worrying about his dying mother or the risks his brother runs to pay off his absent father’s debts with a lender, Harper is trapped in Emberfall in the center of the curse. Harper, who has cerebral palsy, is surprised to learn that she is Rhen’s last chance to break the curse. But Harper is not sure if the destiny of a kingdom can be enough to make him fall in love. Kemmerer’s new version “Beauty and the Beast” presents a unique world full of fantasy and threat. Rhen is an accomplished yet pessimistic strategist, while Harper is impulsive to the point of imprudence. Despite his obvious tension and occasional chemistry, Rhen’s evolving friendship with his guard commander Gray is often more convincing than Harper’s interactions with either. While Harper and Rhen achieve a lot in the course of the novel, this installment has little in the way of closing. VERDICT The construction of a rich world, the signs of a love triangle and the unresolved questions will leave readers eager to see what happens next. A strong choice
