Othello is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, around 1603. The story revolves around two characters, Othello and Iago. Because of its persistent themes of passion, jealousy, and race, Othello remains topical and popular and is widely performed, with numerous adaptations.

Othello Summary

Othello is a Moorish military commander who served as general of the Venetian army in defense of Cyprus against the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. He had recently married Desdemona, a beautiful and rich Venetian lady younger than himself, without his father’s knowledge and despite her later objection. Iago is Othello’s malevolent ensign, who maliciously stokes the jealousy of his master until the usually stoic Moor kills his beloved wife in a fit of blind rage.

Othello Review

Shakespeare constructs so many differences between his hero and heroine (differences of race, age, and cultural background) that perhaps we should not be surprised that the marriage ends disastrously. But most people who see or read the play feel that the love the play presents between Othello and Desdemona is so strong that it would have overcome all these differences if it were not for the words and actions of Othello’s standard bearer, Iago, who hates Othello and sets out to destroy him by destroying his love for Desdemona.

When Othello succumbs to Iago’s insinuations that Desdemona is unfaithful, fascination (which dominates the first acts of the play) turns to horror, especially for the audience. We are faced with the spectacle of a generous and trusting Othello in the clutches of Iago’s plans; of an innocent Desdemona, who has given herself completely to her love for Othello only to be subjected to her horrible verbal and physical attacks, the result of Othello’s mistaken beliefs about her infidelity.
