Rule of Rose is a survival horror video game developed by Punchline for the PlayStation 2. Set in England in 1930, the plot revolves around a nineteen-year-old woman named Jennifer, who becomes trapped in a world ruled by young people who have established a class hierarchy called the Red Crayon Aristocrats. It was first released in 2006 by Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan. After the US and European branches of Sony Computer Entertainment expressed no interest in localizing the title, it was published by Atlus USA later that year in North America and by 505 Games in Europe.

Gameplay
Rule of Rose plays like a typical survival horror game. Jennifer explores the environments and searches for items around the airship, advancing the plot by completing tasks, solving puzzles, and taking on random enemy battles and some bosses. The player, Jennifer, is forced to seek out the chapter’s monthly gift to appease the aristocracy and donate it to the Gift Box, or die.

How To Play
Rule of Rose is a survival horror game in which the player guides Jennifer through exploring the game’s environments and advances the plot by performing tasks while she sporadically encounters enemies and bosses.
Described as “essentially an interactive film” by its director Shuji Ishikawa and associate producer Yuya Takayama, Rule of Rose’s narrative focuses on the traumatic childhood memories of Jennifer, “an ordinary, vulnerable girl”; these memories are sometimes exaggerated.
Combat is almost exclusively melee-based, with a variety of improvised weapons available such as kitchen knives and pipes. Jennifer is a shy character: her melee attacks are not powerful or long-range. Evading enemies is usually a more viable strategy than fighting. With the exception of a handful of bosses, all of the enemies in the game are imps, spindly doll-like creatures the size of small children. Different animal-headed imps appear throughout the game, along with normal imps.
