Under Currents From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts, UnderCurrent is a novel about the power of family to harm—and to heal.

Summary

Zane Bigelow grew up in a beautiful, perfectly maintained house in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Strangers and even Zane’s own aunt on the other side of the lake see their parents as a successful surgeon and his elegant wife, making appearances at their children’s ballet and baseball recitals. Only Zane and her sister know the truth until a brutal night finally reveals cracks in the facade, and Zane escapes to the university without thinking of looking back …

Years later, Zane returns to his hometown determined to reconnect with the place and the people who mean a lot to him, despite the painful memories. As he resumes life in the colorful city, he meets a talented landscape artist named Darby, who runs away from his own ghosts.

Together they will have to teach each other what it means to face the past and defend those they love.

Review

A battered child struggles to escape and then returns as a lawyer to his beloved hometown, but just when he is falling in love with a transplanted landscaper, a series of attacks by shadow enemies threaten his happiness.

“From the outside, the house on Lakeview Terrace looked perfect.” Which, of course, means it wasn’t. We are introduced to the horrible Dr. Graham Bigelow, who hits his wife and, increasingly as the child grows, his son, Zane. The night of Zane’s prom, a particularly wild attack puts him and his sister in the hospital, and his father blames Zane and takes him to jail. Then his sister defends him, asking for his aunt’s help, and everything changes, mainly due to Zane’s secret diaries. Almost 20 years later, Zane leaves a successful career as a lawyer to return to Lakeview, where his aunt and sister live with their families and decide to hang a tile as a lawyer for a small town. Then he meets Darby McCray, the landscaper who recently moved and took the city by storm, starting with the transformation of his family’s rental bungalows. The two instantly intrigue each other but slowly move towards a relationship that neither of them is looking for. Darby has a violent past of her own, so she is more than willing to run the risk of antagonizing a rude local family when she and Zane help a battered wife. Suddenly, Zane and Darby face one attack after another, and even as they get closer and closer under pressure, the dangers become more insidious. Roberts’ last title feels a bit long and the story is a bit cumbersome, but his greatest strength is to make the reader feel connected to his characters, so “unnecessary details” can also enchant and attract.
