If your Dungeons and Dragons group is interested in darker, grittier adventures, Ghostfire Gaming’s Grim Hollow: The Campaign Guide might be the book for them. Set in Etharis, a land ravaged by plague, violent superstition, and a pantheon of gods who have ultimately killed each other, Grim Hollow is an explicitly bleak campaign setting for D&D 5e. At just under 300 pages, this book contains world-specific lore, maps, quest modules, new monsters, mechanics, and character options that can fit nicely into almost any D&D setting.

Etharis is a bleak world, plagued with thematic (and literal) darkness. The vampiric Crimson Court of Soma rules a kingdom shrouded in permanent night, unearthly mists cover the swampy city of Morencia, and the Norse Valikan clans spend half the year in a frozen, sunless land. In this darkness, the mud never fully dries, and the few crops grow “strange and bitter.” Elsewhere, the dreaded weeping pox ravages the cities, and the dubious plague doctors of the Morbus Doctore offer dubious cures at a terrible cost. Monsters, human and inhuman, lurk beyond the torchlight, and the gods themselves have died or left the world. Their angelic and demonic lieutenants take their places, answering the prayers of the clerics and paladins, but also frequently misrepresenting the ideals of their former masters.
