The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel by English author and scholar J. R. R. Tolkien. Set in Middle-earth, the story began as a sequel to Tolkien’s 1937 children’s book, The Hobbit, but eventually became a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling books ever written, with more than 150 million copies sold.

The Lord of the Rings Summary
In ancient times, the Rings of Power were crafted by elven smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he searched for it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many centuries, it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s stronghold in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings but always sought the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo turned eleven, he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a dangerous mission: travel across Middle-earth, into the depths of the Dark Lord’s shadow, and destroy the Ring by throwing it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger named Strider.
