Red White and Royal Blue Summary
McQuiston first came up with the idea for what would become red, white, and royal blue during the 2016 US presidential election. While watching a season of HBO’s comedy series Veep and reading a biography of Hillary Clinton written by Carl Bernstein, A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton, and The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, were intrigued by the high-profile and extravagant lifestyle of royalty and wanted to write their own version of a story starring a royal family.
Red White and Royal Blue Review
The first son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince on this side of the Atlantic. With his fearless sister and Veep’s genius granddaughter, they form the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International high society duties come with downsides, namely when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis, Prince Harry, at a royal wedding are leaked to the tabloids and threaten US-British relations. The plan for damage control: staging a mock friendship between the Firstborn and the Prince.
As President Claremont launches her bid for re-election, Alex finds himself embroiled in a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and turn the two nations upside down. What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?
