Myriad Pro Font is a humanistic sans-serif typeface designed by Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly for Adobe Systems. Myriad was conceived as a neutral, general-purpose typeface that could meet a variety of uses and have a shape that is easily expandable through computer-aided design to a wide range of weights and widths.
Myriad is known for its use by Apple Inc., replacing Apple Garamond as Apple’s corporate font from April 29, 2002, to January 24, 2017. Myriad is easily distinguished from other sans-serif fonts due to its descending “y” (tail) and sloping “e” cut.
Myriad is a humanistic sans-serif, a relatively informal design that takes influences from handwriting. Its letterforms are open rather than “folded” in the grotesque 19th-century sans-serif pattern, and its slanted shape is a “true cursive” based on handwriting. The ‘g’ is a single story and the ‘M’ has sloping sides in the model of Roman square capitals. As a family thought for the body of the text and influenced by the traditional printing of books, text figures, and cover figures are included at the height of the cover. Twombly described the design process as one of brainstorming to create a “homogeneous” design but said that, in hindsight, she found the experience “too difficult” to want to repeat it.
Myriad is similar to Adrian Frutiger’s famous Frutiger typeface, although the italic is true italic as opposed to Frutiger’s oblique; Frutiger described it as “not badly done” but felt the similarities had gone “too far.” Later versions of Segoe UI and Corbel are also similar.
During the 1990s, Adobe developed a multi-master version of Myriad, an ambitious format intended to allow the user to adjust the weight, width, and other design features to their preferred shape. The concept was not widely supported by third-party applications, so most versions of Myriad have been made in the form of separate source files. Since then, the concept has been redeveloped as part of OpenType variable font technology.
