Poppins Font is a geometric sans serif typeface designed by Ninad Kale. The Latin is from Jonny Pinhorn. It has been a popular design tool since these actors took the world stage. Poppins are one of the newcomers to this long tradition. With support for the Devanagari and Latin writing systems, it is an internationalist version of the genre.
Many of the Latin glyphs (like the ampersand) are more constructed and rationalistic than is typical. The Devanagari design is particularly new and is the first Devanagari typeface with a variety of weights in this genre. Like Latin, Devanagari is based on pure geometry, particularly circles.
Each typeface is nearly monolinear, with optical corrections applied to the joints of the strokes that were necessary to maintain a uniform typographic color. The height of the base character of Devanagari and the height of the Latin ascendant are equal; Latin capital letters are shorter than Devanagari characters, and the Latin x-height is quite high.
During the 1920s, Central European type foundries joined modernist movements in art and design. Modernism was truly international in scope; just three years after the founding of the German Bauhaus school, several of its painting teachers were already exhibiting their work in Calcutta.
Geometric sans serif typefaces have been a popular design element since these actors took the world stage. Poppins are one of the newcomers to this long tradition. An open-source family that supports both Devanagari and Latin, this typeface is an internationalist take on the genre without geometry. Many of the Latin glyphs, the ampersand, for example, are much more constructed and rationalistic than in previously published geometric typefaces. Poppins’ Devanagari design is particularly new. It is likely to be the first large Devanagari family in this style to be launched on the market.
The Poppins family includes five pesos, from Light to Bold. Each font includes 1014 glyphs, including all the unique joint forms needed to compose Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, etc. Like the Latin glyphs, the Devanagari shapes in Poppins are based on pure geometry (particularly circles). Poppins’ lettering is practically monolinear, although optical corrections have been applied to the articulations of the strokes when necessary, to maintain a uniform color in the text. The height of the base character of Devanagari and the height of the Latin ascendant are equal; Latin capital letters are shorter than Devanagari characters, and the Latin x-height is quite high.
The Devanagari glyphs in Poppins were designed by Ninad Kale. The Latin is from Jonny Pinhorn. The Indian Type Foundry first published Poppins in 2014.
