ITC Avant Garde Gothic Font is a geometric sans serif font family based on the logo font used in Avant-Garde magazine. Herb Lubalin came up with the concept for the logo and the accompanying typeface, and then he and Tom Carnase, a partner at Lubalin’s design firm, worked together to transform the idea into a complete typeface.
The condensed fonts were drawn by Ed Benguiat in 1974, and the oblique ones were designed by André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind, and Christian Mengelt in 1977.
The original designs include a version for establishing headlines and another for copying text. However, in the initial digitization, only the text layout was chosen, and ligatures and alternate characters were not included. The font family consists of five weights (four for condensates), with complementary obliques for wider fonts.
When ITC released the OpenType version of the font, the original 33 alternate characters and ligatures were included, plus additional characters. Elsner + Flake also issued the ligatures and alternate characters separately as Avant Garde Gothic Alternate.
