Avenir Font is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1987 and released in 1988 by Linotype GmbH.
The word Avenir in French means “future”. As the name suggests, the family is inspired by the geometric style of sans-serif typeface developed in the 1920s that was based on the circle, such as Erbar and Futura. Frutiger intended Avenir to be a more organic interpretation of the geometric style, more uniform in color and suitable for extended text, with details reminiscent of more traditional typefaces such as the ‘a’ and the double-decker ‘t’ with a curl at the bottom. bottom. and letters like ‘o’ that are not perfect and exact circles, but optically corrected.
Frutiger described Avenir as his best work: “The quality of the drawing, more than the intellectual idea behind it, is my masterpiece. (…) It was the most difficult typeface I have ever worked on in my life. Working on it, I always had human nature in mind. And what’s crucial is that I developed the typeface alone, in peace and quiet, with no copywriters there, no one was there. My personality is stamped on it. I’m proud of having been able to create Avenir “.
