Principles: Life & Work is a 2017 book by hedge fund manager Ray Dalio based on the principles he had developed while directing Bridgewater Associates. These Principles for Success were also made available as an ultra mini-series adventure by the author.

In 1975 Ray Dalio founded an investment company, Bridgewater Associates, in his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Forty years later, Bridgewater has made more money for its clients than any other hedge fund in history and has become the fifth-largest private company in the United States, according to Fortune magazine. Dalio himself has been named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Along the way, Dalio discovered a set of unique principles that have led to Bridgewater’s exceptionally effective culture, which he describes as “an idea of meritocracy that strives for meaningful work and meaningful relationships through radical transparency.” It is these principles, and not anything special about Dalio, who grew up as an ordinary child in a middle-class Long Island neighborhood, that he believes is the reason for his success.

Mr. Dalio has long been an object of fascination. . . . His new book is more significant than the original list of principles: it is part memory, partly practical guide. It is a deeply personal story, with Mr. Dalio going into how his company started in 1975, internal conflicts within the company, and conflicts early in his career. The book is instructive and surprisingly moving. . . . Beneath what may seem like a clinical, emotionless approach, there is something different and much more moving: Mr. Dalio is preaching for people to have a sense of humility and introspection, the ability to open up to appreciate critical criticism and use it to to get better.
