Strongholds and Followers Summary
More than just a set of rules and tables, this book also describes a style of play that assumes that your character is more interested in influencing the world around him. You’ll continue to venture out and fight monsters, but this supplement gives you tons of fun things to do during your downtime.
It only takes a character-building fortress to radically change the nature of a campaign and introduce new storytelling opportunities for both GM and players! Huge opportunities for new stories arise! This book includes tons of examples for GMs to inspire.
What’s in the Book
The art also looks like triple “A” quality material. About half of the content is dedicated to describing the mechanics of the titular strongholds and followers, and the remaining half is dedicated to an adventure path and a surprisingly large bestiary. In total, it contains:
Rules for building and maintaining fortresses.
Rules for recruiting and using followers.
A fifth-level adventure path “The Siege of Castle Rend”.
56 new monsters including story, stat blocks, and spectacular art.
28 new magical items and facilities (more on this later).
Rules for mass combat and recruitment of armies.
Strongholds and Followers Review
If you’ve been playing D&D and similar games for a long time, chances are you’ve had at least one situation where your group tried to build a base of operations. Throughout the history of RPGs, we’ve had quite a few tries with this concept, with mixed results. Fortresses, castles, and other large facilities can be the ultimate goal of a party, or even a driving force, as the campaign focuses on your ever-growing fortress.
