The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children Book By Shefali Tsabary It is a tremendous privilege to raise children, although for quite a different reason than most parents imagine.
While we believe that it is our responsibility to mold and shape our children’s futures, the essential premise of Dr. Shefali Tsabary’s A Call to Mindful Parenting is that our children are born to create a deep inner transformation within us.
Our children have the power to unleash our selfish behavior like no one else, unleashing all of our emotional reactivity. Since, through our intimate relationship with them, we are exposed to our immaturity, they become the most faithful mirror of our own lack of emotional development. In other words, by inviting us to confront who we are in our relationship with them, our children raise us to be the parents they long for us to be.
Despite our best intentions to raise our children well, in our unconsciousness, we pass on emotional legacies to our children that have profound and lasting repercussions. By bequeathing to them our unresolved needs, unfulfilled expectations, and frustrated dreams, we chain them into unconscious patterns that lock them into their own unique self.
To do justice to parenthood, parents must become aware of it. Only to the extent that we are willing to transform our own emotional present can we positively influence the future of our children.
Dr. Tsabary asks us to put aside the traditional parenting strategies that excel in controlling our children and instead find a true kinship with their spirits by tuning into who each child is in their own unique essence. Surrendering to the unity of the parent-child relationship in this way takes the parents out of the physical and into the realm of the sacred.
Sprinkled with hands-on, hands-on examples from Dr. Tsabary’s real-life experiences with the countless families she has helped to consciously travel together, A Call to Conscious Parenting is a manual for giving our children the opportunity to shine and dazzle with their natural state of being.

Book Review
Rather than simply being the recipient of the psychological and spiritual legacy of parents, children function as harbingers of parental development. Parents unknowingly pass on a heritage of psychological pain and emotional superficiality. To manage the resulting behavior, traditional parenting books abound with clever management techniques and quick fixes for dysfunction. However, in Dr. Shefali Tsabary’s conscious approach to parenting, children serve as mirrors of their parents’ forgotten selves. Those willing to look in the mirror have the opportunity to establish a relationship with their own inner state of wholeness. Once they find their way back to their essence, parents enter into communion with their children, moving away from the traditional “know-it-all all” approach from parent to child and more toward a mutual relationship between parent and child. The pillars of the parental ego crumble when parents awaken to their children’s ability to transport them into a state of presence.
