Papyrus Font is a widely available typeface designed by Chris Costello, graphic designer, illustrator, and web designer. Created in 1982, it was drawn by hand over six months using a calligraphic pen and textured paper. Papyrus has several distinctive features, including rough edges, jagged curves, and tall horizontal strokes in capital letters.
Costello created the font in 1982 when he was 23 and had just finished college. He had been studying the Bible and came up with the idea of what a source written in biblical times would look like in the Middle East. He drew the font by hand over six months using calligraphy pencil and textured paper. Costello described his goal as a font representing what English texts would look like if they were written on papyrus 2,000 years ago. Costello released the font the following year along with Letraset. Papyrus has several distinctive features, including rough edges, jagged curves, and tall horizontal strokes in capital letters.
ITC, the current owner of the typeface, describes it as an “unusual Roman typeface [that] effectively fuses the elegance of a traditional Roman typeface with the handcrafted look of highly skilled calligraphy.” Costello sold the rights to the font for $ 750 and, as of 2017, claims that it still receives “very low” royalty payments despite its inclusion since 2000 on all personal computers using a Mac or Microsoft operating system. In October 2017, Costello agreed that Papyrus had been overused.
