The Wicked King Review

Let’s talk about Holly Black for a moment. This woman weaves a word spell on all readers. I remember picking up The Cruel Prince a year ago, curious about this dark story of Jude Duarte and his sisters, Taryn and Vivian, after being moved to the land of the just people. She caught me when Jude’s ambitions led her to take control of her own life, much to the anger of the man who raised her, and of a fairy prince who seemed to put a target on her back at every step. I burned with rage when Jude suffered at the hands of just people, and I smiled proudly to show them how strong the spine was that our beloved human girl really was. Then there was our thug Cardan, who stole my breath with his sinful actions and his terribly handsome face. With so many twists and turns, this story never took me where I expected to go. The cast of characters is so treacherous that you will love them in one moment and curse their existence in the next. Holly Black is very good at making the reader do that. After finishing the book, I was starving for more. And so…

I have the galley for The Wicked King. He took everything he had to not break it and instead savor the trip. After everything Jude has gone through, what could Holly Black do now?

Let me tell you, he did enough. I urge you, if you haven’t read The Cruel Prince, please do it. Few stories can completely involve the reader in mind, body, and soul. You could finish the story in a day as I did, but it will stay with you forever.

This book was dark, provocative, full of real intrigue, and power plays in abundance. To summarize the story in The Wicked King, Jude is still working on the fact that his brother is Faerie’s heir and needs to keep him safe. To do so, he joined Cardan, who was once a sworn enemy, and became a temporary ally. Now in the royal court of Faerie, Jude and Cardan must navigate Faerie’s policy and any misstep could cost them a lot. As if this were not enough, Jude constantly disagrees with Cardan, who takes all measures to humiliate or challenge his desires. At the same time, there is something in Jude that Cardan seems unable to escape. When Jude discovers that someone wants to betray her, she must venture and find the traitor before she can ruin her plans or lose her life in the process. The Evil King will leave you on the edge of your seat and devastate your emotions in the process.

That is exactly what it was after finishing reading this. Devastated

After reading The Wicked King, I felt emotionally exhausted by the way a book leaves you after being completely captivated by history, characters, and the world. I live for books like this. You follow Jude on this trip, and as in The Cruel Prince, you will find yourself feeling his emotions as you go through the story. Who could resist the politics, sexual tension and imminent threats that accompany fairy court?

Family ties are also revisited in The Wicked King. Jude must still deal with his family schemes, which may or may not be aligned with his. Honestly, I can’t say more about this part, but, oh lord, it gets well on this front.

Did I mention sexual tension right? It’s great and it’s not overwhelming. The story incorporates these small scenes that do an excellent job to provoke your interest. That said, sexy and romance are elements of this story, but not the main story. I admire the fantasy writers who can do this today.

Let’s talk about the characters for a minute. Jude is still this rude human girl whose ambitions are getting her places. With a hint of youthful arrogance that makes me feel a little nervous, but it makes you want to protect her the same. Taryn still reminds me of her sister’s shadow, which may not seem like much, but it’s just as dangerous. The bomb and the cockroach are so incredibly shameless and their roles in this book should not be discarded lightly either. Cardan remains an enigma. You love him, you hate him, you probably want to sleep with him * wink *. I definitely feel that we can see a little more in-depth than this character, even more than in The Cruel Prince. Do many things happen in this story and we still have about six months left so we can see this beauty in stores?

How could this book not receive a 10/10 from me? There was nothing I didn’t like about the story. The interactions between Jude and Cardan. Jude and Madoc. Jude and Taryn. God, Jude, and their interactions with everyone will leave you screaming, crying, laughing or boiling. Honestly, I can’t wait for this book to come out in January, and for everyone to finally see for themselves how amazing this book is, and die when we have to wait a little longer for the last book in the trilogy, Queen of Nothing. I can’t wait to have a finished copy in my hands!
