Trajan Font is a serif typeface designed in 1989 by Carol Twombly for Adobe. The design is based on the shapes of the capitalist monumental letters or Roman square capitals, as used for the inscription at the base of Trajan’s column from which the typeface takes its name. Trajan is an uppercase typeface, as the Romans did not use lowercase letters. Twombly created the design taking inspiration from a full-size image of an inscription rubbing. He is well known for appearing on many movie posters. Ironically, the typeface is inappropriate for writing in Latin.

Trajan Font Story

The capitals of Trajan’s Column have long been an inspiration to many artists and students of letters. The calligrapher and type designer Edward Johnston in his book Writing & Illuminating & Lettering (1906) wrote that “Roman capitals have been supreme among letters for legibility and beauty. They are the best forms for the grandest and most important inscriptions.” . Trajan’s letterforms were used for many years for signs on British public buildings, including government offices.

Twombly’s translation of Trajan’s inscription in typography is quite neat and faithful. Many more flexible interpretations (often with invented lowercase) predate Twombly, notably Emil Rudolf Weiss’s “Weiss” from 1926, Forum Title by Frederic Goudy, Hadriano and “Goudy Trajan”, and Diotima by Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse , while Warren Chappell’s “Trajanus” from 1939, while having similar uppercase forms, has a markedly medieval lowercase. Many other examples of letters and typefaces are based on Roman capitals, for example, letters made under the Influence of the Arts and Crafts movement in the 19th and 20th centuries Alastair Johnston’s review of Trajan in 1990 pointed to this heritage, saying it “surpasses anything old Fred Goudy ever produced.”

Twombly retired from Adobe and type design in 1999, but Adobe has continued to release versions in consultation with her. Trajan Pro was the initial release of OpenType, which added support for Central European languages and added lowercase in lowercase slots. In 2012, the existing OpenType version was significantly revised as “Trajan Pro 3”, and Robert Slimbach added four additional weights, as well as Cyrillic and Greek glyphs. Adobe has also released a “Trajan Sans” companion face, forming a superfamily of fonts. Neither version supports the archaic Latin vowels I long or vertex-V.

Trajan Font Uses

Trajan was designed to display instead of printed text, specifically for use in large sizes.

Twombly’s digitization of Trajan has become very popular, as seen in its widespread presence on movie posters, television shows, and book covers. A bold weight was added to Trajan when he went digital.
